Dean Joseph Porter, 49, of St. Paul had been drinking heavily around t he time of the mid-December murder of William Shocinski, but he said t hat had nothing to do with the violent attack.
Shocinski’s two children, Kristine and Bill, said at the sentencing i n Ramsey County District Court that their father had provided free roo m and board for Porter for a year.
Porter had helped care for his mother, Shocinski’s second wife, whil e she was dying of cancer last winter. He stayed in the home after sh e died; he had been evicted from his Arden Hills apartment for nonpaym ent of rent in the fall of 2009.
“How could he murder someone who cared about him?” Bill Shocinski sai d at the hearing.
He and his sister said Shocinski, 69, had called them both on the Tues day before he was found dead. It was the last time they would talk t o him.
He was upset, Bill Shocinski said.
“Someone had been using one of his credit cards and charged it up to $ 5,000,” Bill Shocinski said. He asked his father if it might be Porter .
“He said, ‘Oh, no, Dean would never do this,’ ” Bill Shocinski said.
Kristine Shocinski called her father again Friday to check on him. Por ter answered, telling her Shocinski had gone to the casino overnight.
She called again Sunday. Again, Porter answered, she said.
“He said he’d have my father call me,” Kristine Shocinski said.
But he didn’t. She put in a call to the casino.
“The casino informed me that he had never stayed there that weekend, ” she said.
Police went to check the home in the 700 block of Como Avenue in St. P aul on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The first time they searched, they didn’t fin d Shocinski.
Later, they found his bloody body in the mudroom.
Bill Shocinski said he and other family members were waiting outside , having gotten a call from police to come back.
“They came out and told us my dad was found in the house dead,” Bill S hocinski said. “All they could tell us was that my father did not di e of natural causes. My first thought was Dean — what had he done?”
The medical examiner estimated the day of death as Sunday, Dec. 19, o r earlier. Shocinski’s children say they think it was several days pri or to when he was found.
Ramsey County District Judge Joanne Smith said Porter’s statements a t his plea hearing Jan. 31 were “one of the most chilling (and) cold ” she’d ever heard in her “many, many” years as a judge. She’s been o n the bench since 1983.
“So you’re going to need to look deeper within your soul … because cle arly you have a very, very serious alcohol problem, and I don’t know w here your mind was,” Smith said.
