Rooney and Mary McCool marriage record at St. Paul's Catholic church, Aylmer, Gatineau, Quebec, Canada: "The sixteenth day of October, one thousand eight hundred and forty-four, after the banns of marriage have been once published at the parish (place?) of the mass of our mission between John Rooney of Wakefield son of age of Michael Rooney and Catherine Caufield [or Callfield], County Galway in Ireland, on the one part, and Mary McCool of Hull, daughter under age of the late Michael McCool and of the late Sarah Flannigan [or Flanigan] on the other part; no impediment having been discovered and whereas the publication of two bans has been by us granted in virtue of our powers, we the undersigned priest missionary have received their mutual consent to marriage and have given them the nuptial benediction in presence of Eliza Paul, James McCool, James Cassidy and Bernard Cassidy, who as well as the parties have declared they could not sign. J. Desantels, priest" This family, through Sarah, is in the 1851 Canada census of Quebec (Canada East), Ottawa (county), Wakefield. The family through Thomas (8 kids) is in the 1861 census of Canada, Township of Wakefield. Next to him is his brother Thomas Rooney and Bridget and their three children (the oldest being from Thomas's first wife). Sometime during 1865 or 1866 the family moved to Minnesota. They we're found in the 1865 Minnesota state census. [There's a John Rooney in the 1869 Minneapolis city directory as a laborer, living between Helen and Oregon streets, which are the 2nd and 3rd streets south of Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis. Minneapolis and St. Anthony were joined in 1872 under the name Minneapolis. He is more likely to have lived in St. Anthony, so this one may not be related.] John and family are in Raymond Township, Stearns County in 1870. Helen Felling's papers: John Rooney (the father) left with a team of oxen to get [or to sell] a load of seed wheat about a mile north of his home. His wagon tipped over and the sacks of grain smothered him [he was found dead buried under the load]. He is listed in the 1880 federal mortality schedule of deaths in Stearns county, the cause of which is listed as "accidental." The Sauk Centre Herald reports this on May 28, 1880. Married 16 Oct 1844 Aylmer, Hull, Quebec, Canada, age 24 years St. Paul's Catholic Church (married 35 years) to: Mary McCool, age by marriage 20 or 21 years Born 1823 Donegal, Ireland Event Description: or 1828, died 30 Nov 1895 Raymond Township, Stearns County, Minnesota Event Description: St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery, Padua, Stearns, MN, age 71 or 72 years, buried Padua, Stearns County, Minnesota According to maps made from Griffiths, McCool is almost exclusively an Ulster name. The name concentrates in Donegal. December 2016: An online family tree of distant relatives has identified the location of the birth (1823) of our great, great grandmother Mary McCool, who married John Rooney. They provided a picture of where she and her parents, Michael McCool and Mary (or Sarah) Flanagan, lived in Cullionboy, Donegal. The McCool homestead was a two-room thatched roof stone structure with an attached shed which was used for the animals. This building, located in the townland of Cullionboy--about 5 miles from Donegal Town--was inhabited until 1967 and, as can be seen in the recent photo, is still standing, minus the thatched roof. One of the witnesses to her marriage to John R. Rooney was her brother James McCool. Also perhaps an Eliza McCool and two people with the last name Casidy (Cassidy?). He was single. 6. Hugh M RooneyBorn 5 Jun 1854 Wakefield Township, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada, died 27 Jul 1948 Bangor Township, Pope County, Minnesota Event Description: St. Donatus Catholic Cemetery, Brooten, age 94 years, buried Brooten, Stearns County, Minnesota Baptismal sponsors: Hugh Rooney and Catherine Rooney Hugh and Winifred were first cousins. Hugh M Rooney was born in Ottawa, Canada and immigrated, with his family, to the U.S. about 1864 (or 1869, according to the 1895 census). They moved first to St Anthony Falls, the site of the present city of Minneapolis, which at that time was so small the town could be covered in a half hour by horse and buggy. Hugh attended a parochial school there until they moved to Padua, MN. In 1889, he was united in marriage to Winifred S Rooney at Sauk Centre, MN. They moved to the farm near Brooten where they made their home until the time of their deaths. Winifred died in1942, at the age of 77 years. Hugh was a lumberman in northern Minnesota for a time, and grew well acquainted with the Indians, learning their languages and customs. He lived also in Montana for a short time, engaged in hunting. Family stories are built around these early days, when his party would often sleep on the ground during the winter, shooting 15 or 20 buffalo before breakfast. At times the Indians would cause trouble, ruining the buffalo skins, terrorizing the men, and breaking up camp . It would appear that Hugh's cousin Michael W. Rooney probably accompanied him to Montana, as he often talked about hunting buffaloes and being acquainted with the Indians. This was at the time when the locusts ate the farmers' crops and of necessity they had to go elsewhere to earn money. Farming, however, was Mr Rooney's livelihood, and he practiced it for 60 years. Hugh was 94 years of age at the time of his death and had resided on the homestead five miles west of Brooten for almost 60 years. Newspaper Article: 9 Jun 1899 Hugh Rooney and Family Narrowly Escape Death by Fire Bangor township in this county was the scene, on Tuesday evening of last week, of a terrible fire caused by a bolt of lightning, during the rain and thunder storm on that evening, the house of Hugh Rooney of the village of Brooten was struck by lightning and almost instantly burned to the ground. The bolt entered the chimney, scattering the brick all over the lower floor, Mr. Rooney was partially stunned by the shock but recovered his physical and mental activity in an instant and with the assistance of his wife managed to rescue the children who were asleep upstairs, by Mrs. Rooney handling them out through the window from which she afterward jumped herself. In their scant night clothing they made their way in the drenching rain to the house of a neighbor where they were sheltered through the night. Some of the children were obliged to stay in bed the next day until kind neighbors came to their assistance with clothing. Mrs. Rooney who was in a delicate condition, gave birth to a child after reaching the neighbors house, the excitement and exertion no doubt hastening the process of parturition. According to latest report mother and baby as well as the other members of the family were getting along all right. It certainly was a narrow escape from death on part of these people, wither by the electric stroke or the fire it instantly originated. The loss to Mr. Rooney is a severe one, as he is a poor man, but he may consider it a fortune that the lives of his dear ones were saved. From the Glenwood Herald of June 9, 1899 Cause of death: Cardiac decongestion at age 94. According to his grandson Roland Rooney, Hugh was the last person in Pope County to be "laid out" at home. They placed the casket on two chairs or saw horses in the front parlor. Chairs were set up for mourners paying their respects. Person were assigned to take turns during the night sitting in the parlor with the casket. A note from probably June 1975, from Ambrose Rooney: He said his sister Helen once asked Hugh Rooney if he'd tell her all about all the old relatives so she could write it down. He said, "Sure," and that he'd come over sometime soon and tell her about them. He died the next week. So this must have been July of 1948. 7. Patrick Joseph RooneyBorn 25 Feb 1856 Wakefield Township, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada, died 1907 Montana, age 50 or 51 years Patrick was born in Quebec, Canada but is in the 1875 census of Raymond Township, Stearns County with his birth family. His marriage is documented and the certificate downloaded. In the 1920 census of Billings, Rose is listed with their son Joseph and she is a widow. 8. Thomas T ""Stuttering Tom"" RooneyBorn 6 Jan 1859 Wakefield Township, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada, died 28 Nov 1925 Sedan, Pope County, Minnesota Event Description: Padua Cemetery, Stearns, Minnesota, age 66 years, buried Padua, Stearns County, Minnesota Baptismal sponsors: Michael Rooney and Bridget Brown Thomas died at age 66 of heart trouble. Ellen's grandfather John on the Avon Rooney side, given his date of birth was very probably a brother to Michael Rooney on the Padua Rooney side, making Ellen and her husband Thomas second cousins. That was a stated assumption among the relatives of long ago. Tom Rooney stuttered except when he swore. He always smoke a pipe. Someone gave him a cigarette, and not being accustomed to it he left it to burn in his mouth. When it got short enough it started burning his whiskers. He said, "Damn your cigarettes!" and never touched another. Originally published August 1998, Padua Cemetery, by Ginny Walz Borgerding Thomas T.
