James Rooney, son of John Rooney and Mary McCool. Born 29 Apr 1848 Wakefield Township, Outaouais, Quebec, Canada, died 10 Jun 1926 Raymond Township, Stearns County, Minnesota Event Description: St. Anthony of Padua Cemetery, Padua, Stearns, MN, age 78 years, buried Padua, Stearns County, Minnesota James Rooney is in the 1870 U.S. census of Ward 2, St. Anthony, city of Minneapolis as a laborer. He was 21 - b. about 1849 - in Canada. Alongside him are his sister "Kate," married to William Martin and their two kids and William's brother John, brother Michael, age 23, and perhaps a cousin, Patrick Killeen, age 40, born in Ireland and probably a Civil War soldier at Ft. Snelling in 1865, born in Galway according to the war record. James's naturalization record is in the Pope County courthouse, dated March 29, 1897 and witnessed by Thomas J. Rooney and Joseph C. He was the fourth child of twelve children. James married Anna (Annie) Egan and they farmed just west of Padua, on the farm owned by Bob Streff in 1976. The big brick house, that still stands today on the farm, was built by James in 1911. James and Anna had seven children: Mary Ellen - became Sister Eucebia, a Benedictine nun at Atckinson, KA and is buried in Kansas. John Charles - John went by the name Charles. He married Elizabeth Schaefer and had seven children. Charles is buried in Sedan. James Dennis - married Anabel Glieden and had on child. They are buried at Tower, MN where their son still lives. Martha Ann - married John Jung and had three children. George - never married, railroad conductor Mpls Railway. Lavina - married Glen Taylor, had three children and they are buried in Belgrade, MN. Emily Frances - died as a child, buried in Padua. Annie died on March 23, 1914. She had a heart condition and died from complications. James continued to farm until 1919 when he sold the farm and moved to Brooten. James died on June 10, 1926 from a stroke. After his death, sometime in the 1920's, his estate received the farm back at Padua. It was resold again. Annie's brother Dennis Egan was married to James' sister, Mary Rooney. James and Annie's children, George, Martha Ann Young, Emily Frances, and granddaughter Marvel Lucile Rooney are buried in Padua. James' parents, brothers and sisters Catherine Martin, Michael J., Thomas T., William, Mary Egan, Elizabeth Egan, and Annie's brother Dennis Egan are all buried in Padua. John Charles "Charles J" RooneyBorn 28 Jan 1875 Raymond Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, died 5 Apr 1941 Glenwood, Pope County, Minnesota Event Description: St. Donatus Catholic Cemetery, Brooten, age 66 years, buried Brooten, Stearns County, Minnesota John C. Rooney John C. Rooney, a retired Bangor farmer who has lived in Glenwood for the past four years, passed away on Saturday, April 5th. He had been ill only for a short time. John Charles Rooney was born on January 28, 1875 at Prescott, Wisconsin and was past 76 at the time of his death. His parents were James and Annie Rooney. At the age of ten, he came with his parents to Stearns county, settling at Padua, in Raymond township. There he grew to manhood and attended the St. Cloud Teachers College. He also taught school for several years. On September 2, 1900 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Schaefer. She preceded him to the grave six years ago. After his marriage, they moved to Bangor township, where he continued to farm until he retired. He was living with his son Delbert in 1940 in Glenwood, a year before his death. Funeral services were held at ten o'clock on Monday from the Brooten Catholic Church with Reverend Smith officiating. The pallbearers were: Steve Mitchell, Jack Casey, John Majerus, Henry Glieden, Wm. Egan and Joe Egan. He is survived by the following children: Delbert of Glenwood, Lester of Minneapolis, Sergeant Harold Rooney of Macon, Georgia, Mrs. Raymond Gulck of Milbank, S. D., Mrs. Jack Bisek of Brainerd, Mrs. Z. Dworsky of Minneapolis and Mrs. Ed. Ryan of St. Paul. A son, Cyril and a daughter, Marvel, are deceased. Surviving him are the following brothers and sisters: George of Padua, James of Brooten, Joe of International Falls, Mrs. Martha Young of Brooten, and Mrs. Glen Taylor of Belgrade. One sister, Sister Eusebia, is deceased. Mr. Rooney was a man of fine character and a man who unassumingly and cheerfully went about his duties in life. Originally published August 1998, Padua Cemetery, by Ginny Walz Borgerding Martha Ann Rooney was the daughter of James and Annie (Egan) Rooney. Martha grew up on the family farm by Padua and then went on to school to be a teacher. She taught north of Brooten before marrying John Peter Jung (pronounced Joung) on June 28, 1905. Lavina Rooney (Marth's sister) and Peter Jung witnessed the wedding, this taken from the church records. After their marriage John and Martha moved to Kenmare, ND and homesteaded there. After a few years, John and Martha returned to the Sauk Centre area, and continued farming. John and Martha had three children: Ethel Young - married Franklin Halverson and had four children Kenneth Young - married Jean Kittleson and had two children Dorothy Young - married John Rosenberger, and is living in St. Cloud Martha and children lived with her parents and helped with the care of her mother, who had heart trouble. In 1919, after the death of her mother, they moved to Brooten with her father and there she worked as the Brooten telephone operator for several years. She then moved to Belgrade and lived there until her death. Martha died of cancer and is buried in Padua by her brother George, and parents James and Annie Rooney. John is buried in Sauk Centre. 5. George Thomas RooneyBorn 19 Dec 1884 Brooten, Stearns County, Minnesota, died 6 Jul 1961 Little Falls, Morrison County, Minnesota, age 76 years, buried Padua, Stearns County, Minnesota George had lived at St Otto's Home, Little Falls, MN for 12 years preceding his death. This home started as an orphanage in 1900 and a place for children whose parents could not care for them. George was retired and had been a custodian for a Minneapolis electrical company. George Rooney was the son of James and Annie (Egan) Rooney. George grew up on the family farm by Padua and then went to Minneapolis to school to be a railroad conductor. After the death of his mother, George came back to help on the farm. His father sold him 120 acres of the homestead, which George farmed until 1919. In 1919 George sold his land, and his father sold the family farm. George returned to Minneapolis to work for the Minneapolis Railway. In the 1920's George and his father got their farms back. George returned again to Padua to farm his land. He constructed a house on the land, and lived there until developing diabetes. George then moved to St Otto home in Little Falls for the remainder of his life. The Padua Pub today is located on the land owned by George Rooney. George Rooney is buried beside his sister Martha and by his parents. His grandparents John and May Rooney, and sisters Marvel and Emily Rooney are also buried in Padua. 6. Joseph Bernard "(null), (null)" RooneyBorn 30 Apr 1892 New York, died after 1942, age at least 50 years The 1920 census says that Joseph is an adopted son, and I presume he was one of the "orphan train" adoptees. In his 1917 WWI registration, he's a farm laborer in Coleharbor, North Dakota, north of Bismarck. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, he's in International Falls, Minnesota. In his 1942 WWII draft registration, he's working at the M&O Paper Company in International Falls, Minnesota and staying at the Frederick Hotel. |
