The faded French: "The 23rd August 1834 the parish priest undersigned baptized John Thomas who was since born of the legitimate marriage of John Rooney farmer and his spouse Helène Hanahan. Thomas Lashinte (spelling?) and Catherine Hanahan have signed as sponsors." John Rooney (junior) is not in the 1861 census of Canada – he died a year earlier. His brother Patrick Rooney was a witness to the church death record.
