Mabel Frances Boyer Barss of Tillamook died June 16, 2004, in Corvallis.

She was born Oct. 18, 1918, to Fred Linsay Boyer and Ella Eleanor Rooney Boyer in Power, Mont.

When she was very young, her family moved from Montana to Stayton, where she grew up and attended school.

She married Roger Phillips Barss of Portland Aug. 3, 1940. He preceded her in death Oct. 26, 2002.

In 1943, she and her husband moved to San Francisco, Calif., for three years while he served in the U.S. Army.

Following World War II, she lived in the Portland area, where she was a homemaker and raised four children. During this period she excelled as an avid gardener which included an assortment of fruits and vegetables, in addition to many varieties of ornamentals. She had a great love for her greenhouse, of which she and her husband made frequent use. She volunteered her time throughout her life, but worked for OMSI during the 1970s in the mailing department, as well as an assistant teacher in the microwave cooking classes held there.

Following her husband's retirement in 1977, she and her husband moved to Tillamook, where she continued to enjoy her hobbies of gardening, salmon fishing, clamming, beach combing and rock collecting. She was active in Tillamook's Sacred Heart Catholic Church and volunteered many years in the Church's Soup Kitchen. She attended swimming exercise classes at the Tillamook YMCA. She and her husband enjoyed camping, traveling to visit their children and grandchildren, and spending their winters in Arizona.

She is survived by four children, Kathleen (Bolivar) Sanchez of Guayaquil, Ecuador, William (Margaret) Barss of Newport, Robert (Natalie) Barss of Bend and John (Alice Wilson) Barss of Bend; a sister, Katherine "Kay" Mather of Portland; six grandchildren, Roberto Sanchez, Rochester, Wash.; Cecilia Herrera, Orlando, Fla., Priscilla Cedeno of Guayaquil, Ecuador, Laura Mooney, Lincoln, Neb., Amy Barss, Portland, and Pasha Barss, Bend; five great-grand-children, eight nieces and seven nephews.

Services will be Saturday, June 26, at 2 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tillamook. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Sacred Heart Church Memorial Fund, 2411 5th St. Tillamook, OR 97141.
