womanHazel Viola GERARDEN‏, daughter of Napoleon "Nap" GERARDEN and Barbara Bell‏.
Born ‎10 Jul 1923 De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin, died ‎17 May 2017 De Pere, Brown County, Wisconsin‎, age 93 years
Hazel Viola (Gerarden) Van De Ven returned to her loving God who created her, redeemed and guided her all of her life on May 17, 2017. She was brought to life by the love of her parents, Napoleon Gerarden and Barbara Bell on July 10, 1923 in De Pere, Wisconsin. Napoleon (Nap) and Barbara raised her in a loving working family of six children: Dorothy, Donald, Hazel, Beatrice, Bernard, and Margaret. Hazel's birth family remained close all of their lives and supported one another through difficult times including the Depression and World War II.

Hazel married her husband Arthur J. Van De Ven and together they had three children; Rev. Kenneth A. Van De Ven of Glendale AZ, Denis (Butch) P. Van De Ven (Diane) of Fairfax VA, Catherine (Cathy) Mary. Cathy was born with Down Syndrome and taught her family and all of her relatives the meaning of unconditional love, a lesson which they have carried with them through today.

Hazel was blessed with two wonderful loving grandchildren and their spouses, Emily Jung (Ben) and Seth Van De Ven (Susan) of Fairfax, VA.

Hazel was blessed too with a special cousin, Jeannie Huepfner, who was like a sister to her and the other Gerarden girls.

She was especially thankful for her many years of friendship with Father Michal J. Minogue whom she considered her younger brother.

All of Hazel's birth family has preceded her in their path to eternal life as well as Arthur her husband and her beloved daughter Cathy.

Hazel touched many peoples' lives with her simplicity, generosity and willingness to accept others for who they were regardless of their station in life or their religious beliefs. She lived most of her life in De Pere. After the death of her husband, her many beautiful and generous nieces and nephews and their families helped her in her elder years. In these later years she spent in Arizona enjoying the sunshine of winter and her friends from church as well as her special furry companion, Mickey. In this last year of Hazel's life while she has been on Hospice (Hospice of the Valley), Hazel made many friends with Hospice particularly with Steve Turner RN and Tiffany Polee. Hazel has been especially blessed by the assistance of friends of the family who were there for her daily, week after week. She so enjoyed getting to know them, their children and grandchildren. Their presence made her quality of life so special this past year. They truly were her caring angels. Hazel had no fear of dying and believed in her Savior's promise of eternal life where she would join all those who preceded her in this life.

The family requests that any kindness you wish to extend in her memory be given to her faith family, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family 1307 Lourdes Ave. De Pere WI 54115 or Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St. Phoenix AZ 85014. A Celebration of the Eucharist and Hazel's life will be at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Family 1307 Lourdes Ave. De Pere, WI 54115 with visitation beginning at 9:00AM on Saturday September 2, 2017.
