Bob Schalow Bob Schalow was born in Pipestone, MN (for $20) in 1941 and produced by Otto and Irene Schalow. Bob was the oldest son of an oldest son of an oldest son of uncertain parentage. As such his friends and family have occasionally proclaimed that he was a scoundrel and a scalawag, but his birth north of the Mason Dixon line proves that he was definitely not a scalawag. Bob had many interests that kept him busy during the course of his life. He was a true blue Brooklyn Dodger fan in his youth, but switched allegiances when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles. When the World Series was cancelled in 1994 due to a player's strike, he quit baseball completely. Horse racing was his number one enjoyment in the 70s 80s and 90s. Bob didn't handicap horses as much as he handicapped trainers, and his diligence in keeping track of horse racing statistics had a major payoff for him which enabled he and his wife Mary to become the proud owners of a racing nag named Lucky Ladybird. Unfortunately, they found that betting on horses could actually be more profitable than owning race horses. Upon his retirement from the computer industry, Bob was able to pursue his most recent passion, counting cards at blackjack tables. He took a great deal of pride in the fact that he had only been blacklisted from one casino during his blackjack career, and a great deal of amusement in the fact that the casino that banned him was one that actually made money off him. Bob had an amazing capacity to enjoy music, especially Rock n' Roll. He listened to it. He studied it. He collected it. He ranked it. He loved it. He shared the joy he received from discovering a little known song by gifting his friends and family with collections of songs under the title of Songs You Didn't Know You Needed. Volume 49 of SYDKYN was in progress at the time of his passing. Bob loved the outdoors, and make yearly pilgrimages to the Boundary Water Canoe Area for several decades. Over the years he enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting, bow hunting, and discovering wild areas to explore. Bob's best achievements, though, were those of the heart. He celebrated 30+ years of marriage to his wife, Mary. He enjoyed close and loving relationships with his children Dave, Deb, and Jaci. He helped his parents through times of strife, and enjoyed being with his siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, and neighbors as often as he could. He was a man who pursued his interests with vigor, and treated his friends to fun times and warm memories. Bob's five year battle with cancer is now over. He chose to live a quality life to the end. Cancer may have knocked all the wheels off his wagon, but it will never remove the many great memories we have of you. Those of us who called you Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Uncle, Friend, Nephew, Cousin, and Neighbor are the better for having had you in our lives. We will miss you Big Bobper. We will miss you.
