Obituary
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waite Park, for Kenneth Charles Rooney, age 84, who passed away on Monday, August 31 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, surrounded by family. The Reverend Timothy Gapinski will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4– 7 PM on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Masks and social distancing will be observed.

Ken was born July 7, 1936 on the family farm in Padua to Walter and Laura (Ahles) Rooney. He married Dorine Hennen September 9, 1957 in Rockville. Ken worked at Honer Waldorf as a machine operator and retired in 1998. Ken enjoyed fishing, hunting on the family farm and also loved woodworking and helping his kids with various projects. He loved tinkering in his garage and was known as Mr. Fix-it because he could fix anything. Ken loved football and baseball especially the Vikings and the Twins. Ken loved his lawn and took great pride in making sure it was always meticulously groomed. He had a great love for music and enjoyed playing the concertina and accordion. He played in the band called the Swinglanders in the 1970's. Ken also loved polka dancing with his wife Dorine. After he retired, he enjoyed a good round of golf, but above all he had a special love for his grandchildren. A famous quote of his was - "If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well."

Ken is survived by his children; Gary of St. Cloud, Dale of Burtrum, Cheryl Simon of St. Cloud, Terri Schwindel of Waite Park, Lori (Scott) Nyren of Annandale, and Mary Rooney (Mike Swan) of Brooklyn Center; sisters and brother; Jeanette Schwindel of Richmond, Alice (Richard) Peters of Sauk Centre, Audrey (Bob) French of Brooten, Clarence (Betty) Rooney of Padua, and sister in law, Rosie Rooney of Belgrade, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorine in 2014, brothers; Willie and Melvin Rooney.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Quiet Oaks Hospice for their great care of Ken.

Melvin Rooney, age 78, of Belgrade and formerly of Brooten, died Friday, November 29, 2019, at the Belgrade Nursing Home with his family by his side. Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 4th at St. Donatus Catholic Church in Broote , with Father David Grundman officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday morning beginning at 9:30 A.M. and continuing until the service. Interment will be in St. Donatus Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Brooten.

Melvin Thomas Rooney, son of Walter and Loretta (Ahles) Rooney, was born at home on the family farm near Padua in Raymond Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, on December 21, 1940. He and his six siblings grew up on that same farm, attending country school through the 8th grade and then Brooten High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1 958. Following graduation, Melvin helped out on the home farm and worked for various neighbors before enlisting in the U.S. Army in December 1962. He served for 3 years, during which time he was stationed in Germany. Following his honorable discharge in 1965, Melvin returned home and found work as a mason with Brietbach Construction in Elrosa.

During his years at Brietbach he worked on local commercial projects. In 1984, he purchased his home in Brooten. After his retirement, he worked various odd jobs and had more time to enjoy his favorite activities, including attending auctions sales, flea markets, and threshing bees. He was always on the lookout for toy tractors and other toy machinery that he could restore. Melvin continued to live in Brooten until earlier this year when he became a resident at Belgrade Nursing Hom e.

He will be remembered by his nieces and nephews as their favorite "bachelor" uncle. They have many fond memories of Melvin getting down on the floor to play with them and horse around. Melvin passed away at the Belgrade Nursing Home on Friday, November 29, 2019. May his memory be blessed.

Melvin is survived by his siblings, Jeanette Schwindel of Richmond, Kenneth Rooney of Waite Park, Alice (Richard) Peters of Sauk Centre, Audrey (Robert) French of Brooten, and Clarence (Betty) Rooney of Padua; a sister-in-law, Rosie Rooney of Belgrade; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Loretta, his older brother, William Rooney; a sister-in-law, Dorine Rooney; and a brother-in-law, Wally Schwindel.
