MORE ABOUT BOB

Bob Mings was Sports Editor of the El Dorado Times from 1985-1996 and again from 1998-2002. During that time, he provided outstanding coverage of all local baseball teams and tournaments held in El Dorado. This included extensive coverage of El Dorado High School baseball State Tournament teams in 1990-1992.

In addition to covering EHS, Post 81, Butler County and the Broncos, Bob always had State Tournament previews for each team in the KSHSAA State Tournament every year it was held in El Dorado and provided write-ups for every game even when EHS was not in the tourney. He did the same thing for the NBC Midwest Regional Tournament.

Bob had extensive experience prior to coming to El Dorado. A 1959 graduate of the University of Montana, Mings covered Minor League Baseball in both the Carolina League and the International League from 1965-1982. He also covered Major League Spring Training and some regular season games for the Baltimore Orioles.

Other assignments included covering the Virginia Squires of the ABA including the ABA All-Star Game and Playoffs from 1971-1974. Bob also covered NFL football, either the Washington Redskins or Baltimore Colts from 1964-1972 including covering the Colts in the Super Bowl in 1971. Bob also covered NASCAR races from 1974-1982.

Mings also covered NCAA Division 1 sports. He covered the Southern Conference and specifically Virginia Tech sports from 1967-1971. Those duties included covering the NCAA Basketball Tournament in 1968, 1969 and 1971; the NIT in 1968; the Liberty Bowl and the Tangerine Bowl in 1968; and NCAA Baseball Regionals in 1968, 1970 and 1971.

One more baseball related duty was serving as Official Scorer for American Legion National Regional Tournaments in 1966 and 1982.

Added this note from Bob's longtime friend William (Bill) Herald.

*****************************************************

Just a note to say that I knew Bob Mings (and was fairly good friends with him) during his term of employment in the newsroom of the Casper (Wyo.) Star-Tribune, and the information doesn't include that he worked there, but I can assure you that he did. [The pictures clearly indicate that he is the Bob Mings I knew].

Bob began work at the Casper newspaper (as a reporter) sometime in late 1963, and he was there for much of 1964 as well. I definitely recall him saying that he moved to Casper from Sarasota (Fla.), where he worked for The Sarasota News, which had gone out of business earlier in 1963.
