Arvid Johansen Born 23 Dec 1905 Oslo, Norway, died 1 Nov 1980 Sartell, Benton County, Minnesota, age 74 years Arvid HJohansen was born in Oslo, Norway on December 23, 1905 the son of Earnest and Julia (anderson) Johansen. He attended school in Norway and at the age of seventeen came to the United States. Arvid lived in New York for one year and then moved to North Dakota. He married Mabel Gaffaney on November 27, 1929 at Villard, Minnesota. The Johansen's lived and farmed in North Dakota until 1937. Arvid and his family then moved to the Alexandria area where he continued to farm until 1944 when he went into carpenter work. Arvid died at the Country Manor of Sartell, Minnesota on Saturday, November 1, 1980. Survivors are his wife Mabel of Alexandria; five sons, Arvid of Saco, Maine; Ernest of McGregor, Iowa; Ansgar Johansen of Platteville, Wisconsin; Jarl of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota; Johan of Tulsa, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Anna Johansen of New York City and Mrs. Nanny Kindel of Whelock, North Dakota and one brother, Ernst of Oslo, Norway. Parish prayer services were held on Monday, November 3, 1980, 8:00 p.m., at the Alexandria Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday November 4, 1980, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Korf officiating. Pallbearers were Arthur Anderson, Gordon Hobart, George Gaffaney, Ambrose Gaffaney, Michael Gaffaney, and Robert Gaffaney. Interment was at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Born 11 Jun 1905 Leven Township, Pope County, Minnesota, died 30 Aug 2002 Evansville, Douglas County, Minnesota, age 97 years Mabel's son Arvid thinks they were married in Pope County - a '28 Ford Roadster drove her home (from North Dakota?) to Pope County. In 1937, during the drought, Arvid sold his turkeys to pay to move his family by train to Douglas County. Mabel Johansen, 97 Mabel was born on June 11, 1905, the daughter of James and Catherine (Martin) Gaffaney in Leven Township, Pope County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Mabel attended school in Villard and furthered her education at the St. Cloud Teachers College. After graduation she taught grade school in Minnesota and North Dakota. Mabel was united in marriage to Arvid Johansen on November 27, 1929 in Villard. The Johansens lived and farmed in North Dakota until 1937 and then moved to Alexandria. She was a member of St. Mary's Church, Daughters of Isabella and Christian mothers. Mrs. Johansen died on Friday, August 30, 2002 at the Crestview Manor in Evansville. She is survived by her sons: Arvid Johansen of Bloomington; Ernest (Joe) Johansen of Alexandria; Ansgar Nick and wife Beverly Johansen of Plattville, WI; Jarl and wife Mary Johansen of Bloomington; Pete Johansen of Irving, TX; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister: Margaret Danielson of California. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arvid; and parents. Parish Prayer Service was held on Monday, September 2 at 6:30 p.m. with a Christian Mothers Rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Al Ludwig officiating. Ernest James JohansenBorn 3 Feb 1933 Williams County, North Dakota, died 20 May 2010 Alexandria, Douglas County, Minnesota Event Description: cremation, age 77 years Ernie and Ansgar were both born on a farm near the Missouri River in North Dakota, delivered by their father. Ernest James ("Ernie") Johansen was born February 3, 1933 in Williams County, North Dakota, the second son of Arvid and Mabel (Gaffaney) Johansen. The family moved to Minnesota when Ernie was five years old, and Alexandria became home, where he graduated from Central High School in 1952. Soon after graduating, Ernie enlisted in the Navy, where he served for four years on a number of ships and in various parts of the world. Upon returning from his tour of duty, he enrolled in a railroad dispatching course, and then spent the rest of his working life with the Milwaukee Road in various locations, including Madison, Wisconsin and Dubuque and McGregor, Iowa. Upon his retirement from the railroad, Ernie moved back to Alexandria to the family home to care for his mother. In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, and was proud of his vegetables as well as the numerous fruit trees he planted and tended. He took meticulous care of the house as well. In 2007, following a stroke, Ernie moved to Knute Nelson Care Center. He passed away there on May 20, 2010. He is survived by brothers Arvid, Ansgar and Pete, sisters-in-law Beverly and Mary, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Jarl, and nephew, Francis Johansen. Very special thanks to brother Pete for caring for Ernie at home for several months prior to his move to Knute Nelson, and for taking care of Ernie's affairs throughout his final years. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria with Reverend Steve Binsfeld officiating. Music was provided by Laurie Youngers and Tom Molder. Inurnment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military Honors were provided by the Alexandria American Legion Post 87, VFW Post 936 and the Minnesota National Honor Guard.
