Charlie Martin Obituary

Charlie Martin, resident of Woodstock, Virginia, passed away on April 12, 2016. The son of Melvin S. and Lydia Taylor Martin, he was born in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Warsaw, New York, where he graduated from high school. Charlie was an Eagle Scout Order of the Arrow and was elected Assistant Area Chief of Genessee Council Troup 32. At the University of Buffalo he earned a B.A. in Physics in 1961. He received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Physics from Notre Dame University in 1966. He was a member of Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity.

Dr. Martin was chairman of the Physics Department at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York during the 1960s. After moving to Virginia in 1969, he was a systems analyst at the Center for Naval Analyses in Rosslyn, Virginia and at the Pentagon. He spent three years stationed at the Groton Submarine Base in Connecticut. Later he was nominated by the Republican Party and ran for the Connecticut Senate.

Proactive in bicycle safety, Charlie was instrumental in lobbying for the pedestrian bridge over the George Washington Parkway at Spout Run. He was the first recipient of the "Golden Spoke Award for Leadership" from the Bicyclists of Arlington, Virginia in 1990. Another of his passionate interests was studying the history of the stock market. In 1998 he published his book, Common Stocks for Ordinary People, which offered a philosophy of life as well as practical guidance for investing in the stock market. He gave workshops on sound financial planning. He also donated a record number of pints of blood at the Winchester Red Cross.

Charlie always loved to dance. He was the 2007 Garlic King in the Virginia Garlic Festival, chosen by the crowd for his energetic dancing. Above all, his family and friends knew him as a wonderful mentor, role model, and unfailing source of love and support. He was quick with a joke or pun, and brought a smile and a hug to everyone around him.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Jean Meyers Martin; daughters Marcelle Martin (Terry Hauger), Laurie Kilmartin (Robert Ierardi), Cindy (Barry) Thompson, Kate (Fred) Glick; son Christopher Martin; grandsons Alex Martin, Richard and Willie Glick, and Miles Thompson; granddaughter, Leila Thompson; sisters Mary Beckary and Jane Martin; and many nieces and nephews.

The Memorial Mass is Monday, April 18th at 11 am at St. John Bosco Church on Main Street in Woodstock. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John Bosco Outreach or the Shenandoah County Pregnancy Center. If you choose, you may donate blood to the American Red Cross.
