James Rooney is in the 1870 U.S. census of Ward 2, St. Anthony, city of Minneapolis as a laborer. He was 21 - b. about 1849 - in Canada. Alongside him are his sister "Kate," married to William Martin and their two kids and William's brother John, brother Michael, age 23, and perhaps a cousin, Patrick Killeen, age 40, born in Ireland and probably a Civil War soldier at Ft. Snelling in 1865, born in Galway according to the war record.

The 1900 census says James was born in April 1846. It says they were married 22 years (1878). But two of their children were then born before the marriage: Mary in 1872 and John in 1875! They had 7 children of which 6 are alive at this point. They lived in Prescott, Wisconsin from about 1874 to 1885. However, one child, John Charles, was born there in 1875 and by 1881 the next child was born in Stearns County, Minnesota.

James's naturalization record is in the Pope County courthouse, dated March 29, 1897 and witnessed by Thomas J. Rooney and Joseph C. Egan.

John C. Rooney

John C. Rooney, a retired Bangor farmer who has lived in Glenwood for the past four years, passed away on Saturday, April 5th. He had been ill only for a short time.

John Charles Rooney was born on January 28, 1875 at Prescott, Wisconsin and was past 76 at the time of his death. His parents were James and Annie Rooney. At the age of ten, he came with his parents to Stearns county, settling at Padua, in Raymond township. There he grew to manhood and attended the St. Cloud Teachers College. He also taught school for several years. On September 2, 1900 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Schaefer. She preceded him to the grave six years ago. After his marriage, they moved to Bangor township, where he continued to farm until he retired. He was living with his son Delbert in 1940 in Glenwood, a year before his death.

Funeral services were held at ten o'clock on Monday from the Brooten Catholic Church with Reverend Smith officiating. One sister, Sister Eusebia, is deceased.

Mr. Rooney was a man of fine character and a man who unassumingly and cheerfully went about his duties in life. He served sixteen years as town clerk and held various positions of trust.

The 1920 census says that Joseph is an adopted son, and I presume he was one of the "orphan train" adoptees. In his 1917 WWI registration, he's a farm laborer in Coleharbor, North Dakota, north of Bismarck. In the 1930 and 1940 censuses, he's in International Falls, Minnesota. In his 1942 WWII draft registration, he's working at the M&O Paper Company in International Falls, Minnesota and staying at the Frederick Hotel.
